About This Seaport
Port de Valleyfield lost its international container-handling licence in 2023, when Canadian federal authorities declined to transfer the permit after operator Valport was sold to the Desgagnés group — a setback for what remains Canada's only bulk cargo port under municipal ownership. Located on Lake Saint-Francis along the Beauharnois Canal section of the St. Lawrence Seaway in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec, the port is run by the paramunicipal Société du Port de Valleyfield and handles roughly 308,000 tonnes of cargo annually. Its eight berths and extensive open and covered storage areas move dry and liquid bulk goods including salt, bauxite, steel, slag, chemicals and lumber, alongside general cargo. A CAD 36 million loan has been authorised to fund expansion of the port facilities. Road and rail links connect the site to Montreal and the wider Great Lakes-Seaway system, and shippers needing container capacity currently route through the Port of Montreal, about 55 kilometres away. Customs clearance for Seaway cargo is handled through the Canada Border Services Agency at the point of destination.
