About This Seaport
Serving the Cabot Strait crossing since 1898, Port aux Basques at Newfoundland's southwestern tip is first and foremost a roll-on/roll-off ferry gateway rather than a cargo-handling port. Marine Atlantic runs the year-round link to North Sydney, Nova Scotia, moving more than 100,000 commercial units annually — over half of all goods entering or leaving the island of Newfoundland. The ferries carry commercial trucks, trailers, livestock and freight alongside up to 1,100 passengers, with a dedicated commercial lounge and check-in at the terminal. The port also anchors the final leg of the Trans-Canada Highway toward St. John's. It does not, however, operate liner container or breakbulk services. Shippers needing full-container service to Newfoundland use St. John's, while Corner Brook serves the island's west.
