About This Seaport
Some 536,500 tonnes of logs left Port Alberni in 2018, most of it bound for China, Japan and South Korea. On the west coast of Vancouver Island, the port runs on forestry: tenants such as Catalyst Paper, Western Forest Products and Mosaic Forestry line much of the Alberni Inlet with log-storage leases. Port Alberni Terminals work three deep-sea berths around the clock, backed by four warehouses totalling about 50,000 sq ft and a 17-acre assembly area. There is no scheduled container service here; the trade is raw logs, lumber and occasional project breakbulk. Highway 4 links the inlet to Nanaimo and the rest of the island, but the port has no through rail connection for freight. Shippers needing containers or liner sailings usually turn to Nanaimo or the mainland gateway at Vancouver. For forest products and breakbulk on the Pacific side of the island, Port Alberni remains the established option.
