About This Seaport
Built in 1912 to ship sugar from the Pomalca estate by rail, the 800-metre pier at Pimentel has long since lost its commercial cargo role. Today the restored landmark on Peru's Lambayeque coast, near Chiclayo, serves tourism and artisanal fishing, including the traditional reed craft known as caballitos de totora. As an open roadstead with a pier depth of about 3.4 m, it offers no modern container or bulk handling. Northern Peru's seaborne trade moves instead through the deep-water ports of Paita and Salaverry.
