Parry Sound is best understood today as a marine-services and tourism harbour rather than a cargo port. On Georgian Bay in Lake Huron, its nearby Depot Harbour was once one of the Great Lakes' busiest shipping terminals and the terminus of the Canadian Atlantic Railway, but commercial operations ended in 1979. Shallow depths and narrow, rocky approaches rule out regular general-cargo or container handling. Freight moving through the Great Lakes instead routes via ports such as Owen Sound or the St. Lawrence Seaway hub of Hamilton.
