About This Seaport
Ore docks and a railway loading trestle were first built at Michipicoten Harbour in 1899 to ship iron ore from the Wawa mines, alongside pulpwood, lumber and coal, and the site once kept its own Canada Customs officer. It remains one of the few deep-water harbours on the rugged eastern shore of Lake Superior, lying roughly 200 km north of Sault Ste. Marie. Its present-day commercial cargo role is limited and largely historical, with no scheduled liner or container service and a cargo-pier depth of about 4.9 m. Shippers needing dependable Great Lakes capacity rely on Thunder Bay or Sault Ste. Marie instead.
