About This Seaport
With 63 registered fishing vessels worked by roughly 69 fishermen, Mevagissey ranks as Cornwall's second-largest fishing port rather than a commercial cargo harbour. The present inner basin dates from a 1774 Act of Parliament, with the outer pier added in 1888, and the site is run by the Mevagissey Harbour Trustees as one of only three Trust Ports left in England. Landings centre on mackerel, sole, lobster and crab, a share of which is exported, yet there is no container, bulk or general-cargo handling. A charted channel depth of about 1.8 m means the harbour partly dries at low water and suits small craft only. Freight forwarders needing quay capacity in this part of Cornwall route through Falmouth or Plymouth, while fish moves onward by road.
