About This Seaport
Rail, road and ferry meet at Mallaig, where the West Highland Line and connecting buses run right to the quayside of Scotland's principal west-coast fishing port. Landings are dominated by langoustine and other shellfish, among the largest such catches in Europe, with the weight of fish landed rising from about 1,096,647 kilograms in 2024 to 1,350,342 kilograms in 2025. The harbour is also a busy node on the CalMac network, with a 45-minute crossing to Armadale on Skye plus services to Lochboisdale and the Small Isles of Canna, Eigg, Rum and Muck. General and containerised cargo is minimal, and a fairway depth of just under five metres caps vessel size. Island supplies move by RoRo ferry and small freighters such as the Miss Marley. Forwarders needing container capacity for Scotland should look instead to the deep-water ports of Grangemouth or Greenock.
