About This Seaport
Lowestoft has reinvented itself as the offshore energy base for East Anglia rather than a conventional cargo port. Britain's most easterly harbour, owned by Associated British Ports, is the closest port to the East Anglia Offshore Wind Farm Zone and hosts operations-and-maintenance facilities including those for the 504 MW Greater Gabbard wind farm. The Lowestoft Eastern Energy Facility (LEEF), a GBP 35 million development opened in January 2025, deepened its role as a support base for offshore wind as well as oil and gas. Conventional traffic such as grain exports and specialised cargoes still moves through the port, but in modest volumes beside the energy business. Shallow depths – an approach channel of about 3.4 m and cargo quays near 4.9 m – limit Lowestoft to smaller vessels, and there is no container liner service. For containers or larger general cargo, forwarders turn to Felixstowe and Ipswich, while nearby Great Yarmouth offers further offshore capacity.
