About This Seaport
Unlike a conventional seaport, Liverpool Bay Terminal (UN/LOCODE GB LIB) refers to Eni's cluster of offshore gas platforms — Douglas, Hamilton Main, Hamilton North and Lennox — in the Irish Sea off northwest England, linked to the onshore Point of Ayr gas terminal. No container or general cargo is handled here; the installation exists solely for natural gas production and processing. The site is now central to the multi-billion-pound Liverpool Bay CCS project, under which the new Douglas CCS platform will inject CO2 from the HyNet industrial cluster in northwest England and north Wales into depleted gas reservoirs, with startup planned for 2028 and capacity rising from 4.5 to 10 million tonnes of CO2 per year. Businesses shipping freight through this stretch of the Irish Sea should instead use the ports of Liverpool, Mostyn or Holyhead.
