The hinterland centres on greater Lisbon, Portugal's largest consumption and manufacturing region, served by motorway and rail, with clearance under the EU Union Customs Code through the Portuguese tax and customs authority. For pure deep-sea transhipment, Sines offers greater capacity, while Setúbal absorbs vehicle and breakbulk flows.
