About This Seaport
Founded in 1758 by Corsican patriot Pasquale Paoli, L'Île-Rousse grew from an olive-trade outlet into a seasonal ferry and roll-on/roll-off port on Corsica's Balagne coast. Today Corsica Linea and Corsica Ferries link it to Toulon, Nice, Marseille and the Italian port of Savona, carrying passengers, cars and accompanied or unaccompanied freight trailers rather than line-haul containers. The quays are run by Cyrnos Services Portuaires and include customs and clearance facilities for both freight and travellers. Because Corsica has no freight rail to the port, all onward distribution moves by road into the Balagne region. Shippers handling containers, breakbulk or project cargo should route through Bastia, roughly 70 km east, with Ajaccio as a southern alternative. For trailer traffic and regional consumer goods, however, L'Île-Rousse remains a practical, well-connected gateway.
