About This Seaport
An enclosed deep-water basin reached through a lock, more than 4,700 metres of quayage, hydraulic material handlers and a Siwertel cement discharger equip Leith to handle better than a million tonnes of cargo a year and vessels up to 50,000 dwt. Operated by Forth Ports under UN/LOCODE GB LEI, Scotland's largest enclosed port sits barely three miles from central Edinburgh and trades mainly in agri and dry bulk – grain, animal feed, cement, steel pipes and recycled products – plus breakbulk and offshore renewables components. Containerised liner traffic is not part of its profile; boxed cargo for Scotland generally moves through Grangemouth. As an anchor site of the Forth Green Freeport, Leith is fast becoming a renewables hub: the deep-water riverside Charles Hammond Berth, formally opened in April 2025, is built for the world's largest offshore wind installation vessels, rated for up to 100 tonnes per square metre and backed by 175 acres of logistics land. It is handling the XXL monopiles for the Inch Cape Offshore Wind Farm, the port's largest ever offshore wind contract. Road and rail connect the docks to Scotland's central belt; Grangemouth and Rosyth are the obvious alternatives by cargo type.
