About This Seaport
Aluminium and liquefied natural gas define cargo flows at Kitimat, a deep-water port at the head of British Columbia's Douglas Channel. Rio Tinto has run its BC Works smelter here since 1954, importing alumina and anodes across Terminal A and shipping out low-carbon aluminium. Since 2025 the LNG Canada terminal has added energy exports to Asia, designed for 14 million tonnes per year from its first two trains. This is an industrial and energy port rather than a container gateway: it handles bulk, breakbulk and project cargo, not scheduled box services. Inland links run via the CN rail line toward Terrace and Prince George and along Highway 37. Forwarders moving containers to or from the region normally route through Prince Rupert's Fairview terminal or Vancouver.
