About This Seaport
Once a base for salmon vessels and floating crab canneries, Hanasaki Ko on the northern Nemuro Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido remains, above all, a working fishing port. It records Japan's largest landings of Pacific saury, alongside sea urchin, crab and kelp, and the local Hanasaki crab takes its name from this stretch of coast. Russian fishing boats call regularly to deliver urchin, crab and kelp to local importers, giving the harbour a modest cross-border seafood role. Relatively light pack-ice exposure keeps the quays workable through much of the year. Container lines, breakbulk and conventional forwarding cargo, however, do not route through Hanasaki Ko: such shipments belong at Kushiro (general cargo and container feeder, about 125 km west) or at Tomakomai, Hokkaido's principal container gateway. For forwarders, the port matters in the fish and reefer trades rather than in scheduled liner traffic.
