About This Seaport
At the head of Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island's rugged west coast, Gold River began life as a company town for a Tahsis Company pulp mill built in the 1960s. The mill closed in 1998, and the deep-water site – pier depth around 9.4 metres – is now being redeveloped as West Coast Marine Terminals across some 236 acres, though no regular commercial liner traffic is yet established. The port currently offers no container handling or customs clearance for forwarder cargo. For dependable freight on Vancouver Island, Nanaimo and Port Alberni are the practical options, with Vancouver on the mainland for larger volumes.
