About This Seaport
Shipbuilding made Georgetown's name in the 19th century, and the East Isle Shipyard still builds tugs at this Cardigan Bay harbour on Prince Edward Island. For freight, it is a small general- and bulk-cargo port handling agricultural produce, pulpwood, seafood and occasional bulk parcels, with no scheduled container service. The deep, largely ice-free natural basin at the mouth of the Brudenell and Montague rivers keeps the navigation season open from mid-April to early January. Four berths spread across two wharves serve coastal and regional traffic rather than deep-sea lines. Road links carry goods inland, as Prince Edward Island no longer has a rail network. Shippers needing containers or intercontinental services route through Halifax, while Saint John, New Brunswick, is a practical alternative for breakbulk and bulk.
