About This Seaport
Around 71 commercial vessel calls and roughly 260,000 tonnes of cargo a year, plus some 35,000 tonnes of fish worth about £27m landed annually, frame Fraserburgh's dual identity as the United Kingdom's largest shellfish port and a working commercial harbour on Scotland's north-east tip. In 2024 the port received £490,000 from the UK Seafood Fund for a comprehensive fishmarket refurbishment, £367,000 from the Marine Directorate for digitisation of the fish auction, and nearly £1.2 million in total from the Scottish Government's Marine Fund Scotland; that year it was also named Port of the Year at the Fishing News Awards. Operated as a Trust Port, it offers about 2.5 miles of quayside with shore power and fresh water, berthing fishing boats, cargo ships and offshore wind vessels (CTV/SOV) alike. Bulk and general cargo dominate the freight side — barley, oats, fertiliser, coal, sand, road salt, timber and offshore equipment — handled on a 24-hour basis. Ship-repair capacity is notable, with a six-berth shiplift for vessels up to 850 t and 36 m and a dry dock taking ships up to 66 m by 14 m. Containers can be accommodated occasionally but not on a liner basis, so scheduled box traffic is better routed via Aberdeen. As a founding member of the Scottish Offshore Wind Ports Alliance (SOWPA), Fraserburgh is positioning for offshore wind supply-chain business; for bulk and project cargo it remains a credible option, with Peterhead and Aberdeen as the nearest alternatives.
