About This Seaport
Around 1.99 million tonnes of cargo and roughly 9,000 TEU pass through Cardiff each year, marking it as a versatile multipurpose port rather than a major container gateway. Operated by Associated British Ports (ABP) on the Bristol Channel at the mouths of the Ely and Taff, the Welsh capital's port works steel and scrap, timber, forest products, fresh produce and dry and liquid bulks. Its three docks — Queen Alexandra, Roath Dock and Roath Basin — are served by seven quayside gantry cranes, mobile cranes, cold storage and some 40,000 m² of transit sheds. Vessels up to about 35,000 DWT can be accommodated. A container service links Cardiff with Ireland, but larger box volumes are better served by nearby Bristol or Liverpool. Road and rail connections distribute cargo across South Wales and beyond.
