About This Seaport
Owned by the Mitsubishi Corporation through Cape Flattery Silica Mines, this terminal on the Cape York Peninsula, about 220 km north of Cairns, is one of the world's largest silica-sand export operations. A single berth served by a travelling ship loader, fed by a roughly 500 m trestle jetty and conveyor from the mine, loads vessels of up to about 70,000 tonnes at rates reaching 20,000 tonnes a day. Around 3 million tonnes leave each year, bound mainly for Japan and other parts of Asia, where the sand has supplied the glass and solar industries for more than 50 years. For freight forwarders this is a dedicated, single-commodity bulk export facility rather than a public port: there is no container, breakbulk or scheduled line service. A recent development is the neighbouring Metallica Minerals silica-sand project, planned at around 1.35 million tonnes a year. Regional containers and general cargo move through Cairns, the nearest commercial port.
