Inland links to markets such as Kinshasa, some 550 km upriver, rely on road and the Congo River, as there is no high-capacity rail connection. Operators and officials expect the port to cut the country's trade costs materially. Until it opens, Matadi and Pointe-Noire remain the practical alternatives for Congolese import and export containers.
