About This Seaport
Crude oil, and crude oil alone, defines Arnold's Cove (Whiffen Head) on Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, home to the Newfoundland Transshipment Terminal rather than a conventional cargo port. Six storage tanks of about 80 million litres each — roughly 3.3 million barrels in total — hold oil delivered by dedicated shuttle tankers from the offshore Hibernia, Hebron, Terra Nova and White Rose fields, together around 250,000 barrels a day. In operation since 1998, the terminal moves the crude on via two jetties aboard smaller tankers serving markets on the eastern seaboard of Canada, the US and the Gulf of Mexico. It handles no containers, general cargo or RoRo traffic and is built purely for liquid bulk, operated by Newfoundland Transshipment Limited. Because the site is designed as a maritime crude hub, it offers no broader hinterland cargo role. Shippers with containerised or breakbulk consignments should turn to St. John's, Newfoundland's principal port.
