About This Seaport
Long the mainland ramp for the Isle of Arran ferry, Ardrossan (GB ARD) on the North Ayrshire coast has temporarily lost that role: since early 2025 CalMac's Arran service has run from neighbouring Troon to Brodick. The new MV Glen Sannox, backed by the chartered catamaran Alfred, works the route because Ardrossan's berth is too small for the latest vessels. To speed the long-delayed upgrade, the Scottish Government acquired the harbour from Peel Ports through Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL). The rebuild is intended to let the port handle Glen Sannox and her sister Glen Rosa, the latter expected in service in early 2027. For conventional freight Ardrossan is in any case of limited use, with general-cargo activity minor. Road and rail links to Glasgow are good, but containerised or breakbulk consignments are better routed through Greenock and Glasgow on the Clyde, or through Troon. Passengers and vehicles bound for Arran should check the current departure port before travelling.
