Abidjan handled 1,697,131 TEU in 2025 — up 3.1% on 2024's 1,646,304 TEU — passing the one-million-container mark for a second consecutive year and confirming its place as West Africa's largest container port. The autonomous port on the Ébrié Lagoon is the region's economic hub and the principal sea outlet for landlocked Mali and Burkina Faso, whose transit traffic moves inland by road and along the Abidjan–Ouagadougou railway (Sitarail). Cocoa is king in its export mix (roughly 40%), alongside coffee, rubber, palm oil and bananas, cargoes that depend on strong reefer and cold-chain capacity. According to Kuehne+Nagel data, average anchorage waiting time climbed to approximately 7 days by end of August 2026 (peak delays reaching 11 days); by early September 2026 the 7-day average had dropped to around 4.25 days as a round-the-clock truck circulation scheme improved cargo flows and backlog recovery progressed — shippers should still factor in buffer time. From April 2026 barge transport was formally deployed in the harbour basin to ease congestion, while two new tugboats joined the fleet in May 2026. For cargo destined to Mali, Burkina Faso or Niger, Abidjan remains the natural gateway, facing growing competition from Tema (Ghana), Lomé and Dakar.
