Definition & Explanation
Warehouse operators and logistics service providers use ZPL label formatting whenever they need to produce shipping labels, pallet tags, or barcode stickers on Zebra printers. ZPL – Zebra Programming Language – is a proprietary command language developed by Zebra Technologies that precisely controls the placement of barcodes, text fields, and graphics on a label. Because Zebra printers dominate warehouse and fulfillment environments, ZPL has become the de facto standard for label generation in logistics. WMS and ERP systems output ZPL code directly to the printer, bypassing conventional print drivers entirely. Unlike raster-based formats, ZPL is text-based, which keeps file sizes small and processing fast even under high-volume print loads.
