The water level (gauge reading; German: Pegelstand) is the water height of a waterway measured at an official gauging station, expressed in centimetres above the gauge datum. For inland navigation it is the most important operational parameter: from the readings of reference gauges such as Kaub, Duisburg-Ruhrort or Maxau, shipping companies and dispatchers derive the available loading draught, the possible cargo quantity and the activation of low water surcharges. An important distinction: the gauge reading is not identical to the depth of the navigation channel – it is a reference value from which the channel depth is calculated. In Germany, the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration publishes the readings continuously via the PEGELONLINE service, allowing transport planning to react on a daily basis. During extreme low or high water, navigation on individual sections is suspended entirely – resulting in transshipment to rail or road, longer transit times and higher transport costs for the entire supply chain.
