When a shipment arrives at a distribution point, the warehouse takes over: goods are received, checked for completeness and damage, put away, picked, and prepared for outbound movement. A warehouse bridges the gap between inbound supply and outbound demand and can hold raw materials, semi-finished goods, or finished products. Equipment ranges from basic floor-storage facilities to fully automated high-bay warehouses with tens of thousands of pallet locations, all directed by a warehouse management system (WMS). Customs law adds another layer: both public and private customs warehouses allow dutiable goods to be held under duty suspension until they are released into free circulation or re-exported.
