Canadian logistics software provider Descartes has acquired Extensiv. The purchase price is approximately 120 million US dollars and was paid from existing cash reserves. The transaction is now complete and not merely announced. Extensiv provides software for warehouse management, inventory, orders, billing, and fulfillment. Fulfillment encompasses processes from warehouse intake through picking and packing to shipping. The focus is primarily on 3PL providers, that is, logistics service providers that take on warehouse and shipping operations for other companies. Descartes combines these functions with its existing network for transport, customs, shipment tracking, last-mile delivery, and freight billing. The buyer expects that the larger volume of data will also improve applications using artificial intelligence. Whether customers will actually benefit from less manual work and better decision-making will be evident after the integration. For logistics companies, an all-in-one platform can be attractive. Interfaces between warehouse, transport, and customs become simpler. At the same time, dependency on a large provider increases. Price changes, product migrations, or an outage can then impact multiple processes simultaneously. The acquisition follows shortly after the announced purchase of transportation management provider Tai. This demonstrates how strongly the logistics software market is consolidating. Small providers with specialized functions remain attractive, but can more quickly become acquisition candidates.
