Transshipment serves to transfer goods or cargo units at an intermediate node from one means of transport to another, enabling the logistics chain to continue under optimised conditions. The need arises when changing transport modes—rail to road, ocean vessel to truck—or when consolidating groupage consignments or splitting loads for onward distribution. The process covers capacity planning, coordination among the freight forwarder, terminal operator and carrier, physical handling, load securing and documentation. Damage claims are disproportionately common at transshipment points, making standardised handling procedures and clear liability agreements between parties essential. Not to be confused with port transhipment in the narrower sense, which refers specifically to cargo transferred between vessels without clearing customs.
