A shipper or logistics provider assigns a unique identification number to every package – the tracking number system. This allows all parties (shipper, recipient, carrier, customs) to monitor the exact location and processing status of a shipment in real time. Numbers typically take the form of barcodes or alphanumeric codes scanned at each handling point. Core functions include: linking shipments to transport vehicles and routes, automating sorting and delivery workflows, providing evidence for claims and customs clearance, and enabling performance analytics. Not to be confused with the shipment numbering procedure itself – the system is the underlying technical infrastructure.
