In cargo and transport insurance, adjusters weigh estimated repair or recovery costs against the insured or market value at the time of loss to determine whether the total loss threshold has been crossed. Maritime insurance draws a clear line between actual total loss – where goods are physically destroyed or irretrievably lost, for example through sinking – and constructive total loss, where salvage or repair is technically possible but would cost more than the goods are worth. Unlike partial damage, no repair takes place; the insurer settles based on the agreed insured value and typically acquires the salvage.
