Definition & Explanation
The German truck toll mileage index measures the distance driven by toll-liable heavy goods vehicles with at least four axles on German motorways, and serves as an early indicator of economic activity, particularly in industry. It is based on the digital process data generated by the truck toll collection system and is published, calendar- and seasonally adjusted, for Germany and the individual federal states by the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) together with the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). The index measures distance driven only, not the volume of goods transported, vehicle utilization, or freight revenue — a rise therefore does not automatically mean more paid loads or higher revenue for carriers.
