Definition & Explanation
Unlike a fixed rate that holds unchanged for the entire contract period, industry freight rate indexing adjusts an agreed base rate at regular intervals—typically monthly or quarterly—according to a predefined reference index. Common benchmarks include published fuel price indices, producer price indices, or sector-specific indicators compiled by statistical agencies or trade associations. Shipper and carrier agree on the base rate, the index source, and the adjustment formula before the first shipment moves. The carrier is shielded from unrecovered cost increases; the shipper gains budget predictability and avoids discretionary surcharges. The mechanism is especially prevalent in long-term framework contracts and for fuel-intensive transport modes such as heavy-lift, temperature-controlled, or oversized cargo.
