Definition & Explanation
Unlike the theoretical number of rack locations, storage capacity denotes the actual, usable volume of a warehouse—measured in pallet positions, cubic metres, or tonnes. It is shaped by physical parameters: ceiling height, net floor area, structural load limits of floors and racking, and aisle widths required for handling equipment. Three dimensions matter in practice: unit capacity (number of load carriers), volume capacity (m³), and weight capacity (tonnes), since different goods hit different limits first. In cold stores or hazardous goods warehouses, regulatory ceilings further constrain the usable figure. Not to be confused with stock turnover, which measures the speed at which capacity is consumed and released.
