Semiconductors are materials such as silicon whose electrical conductivity lies between that of conductors and insulators and can be precisely controlled. In trade and logistics, the term usually refers to the components made from them: microchips, processors, graphics processors, memory chips and power semiconductors, as well as the silicon wafers from which they are produced. Semiconductors have a very high value per kilogram and are therefore shipped predominantly by air freight. They are sensitive to electrostatic discharge, moisture, shock and temperature fluctuations and require antistatic, often moisture-proof packaging. Because of their value they are regarded as theft-prone cargo; in addition, certain chips and manufacturing equipment are subject to dual-use export controls.
