Once a driver takes the wheel for commercial goods transport in Germany, the Professional Driver Qualification Regulation (BKrFQV) applies. Before starting work, drivers must complete an initial qualification comprising an approved training course and both theoretical and practical examinations; thereafter, periodic refresher training is compulsory. Hauliers are required to maintain verifiable records of compliance for all driving staff – gaps in documentation can trigger fines and put the operator's Community licence at risk.
