A preferential origin check is the verification that imported or exported goods meet the origin rules of a trade agreement and thus qualify for duty-free or reduced-tariff treatment. In customs practice, the authority (or the importer as part of self-assessment) reviews origin certificates, invoices, and manufacturing processes against the applicable cumulation and value-added rules of the agreement (e.g., EU free trade agreements, Generalised System of Preferences). Without a successful preferential origin check, regular tariffs apply instead of preferential rates.
