Port-to-Port sea transport is an international sea freight contract under which the carrier's scope of service and liability is limited to the ocean leg between the port of loading and the port of discharge. The shipping line assumes responsibility when it takes charge of the cargo at the origin terminal and releases it once the container is made available for collection at the destination terminal. Unlike Door-to-Door or CY-to-Door arrangements, both the shipper and the consignee must separately organise pre-carriage to the export terminal and on-carriage from the import terminal, either directly or through a freight forwarder. This model underpins the standard liner service and forms the contractual basis of most bills of lading. It suits shippers who manage their own inland logistics at origin and destination.
