Definition & Explanation

Packaging in transport and logistics refers to all materials and containers – cartons, films, cushioning, wooden frames, plastic boxes – that enclose, protect, and make goods manageable for shipment or storage. It serves three core functions: protecting cargo from mechanical damage, moisture, and compression; identifying goods through labelling and barcodes; and enabling efficient manual and automated handling. Packaging also carries direct legal weight: dangerous goods consignments are subject to mandatory requirements under ADR, the IMDG Code, or IATA-DGR, and inadequate packaging can expose the shipper to liability for resulting damage. Pallet dimensions, stacking loads, and outer markings are frequently governed by contract between shipper and consignee, with a direct impact on freight rates, insurance premiums, and damage claims. Not to be confused with the packaging instruction, which specifies how a given packaging solution must be implemented.
