Predictable replenishment and streamlined supplier coordination are the core advantages of the order cycle system. Rather than triggering orders when stock falls to a defined threshold, this inventory replenishment method places orders at fixed, predetermined intervals – weekly or fortnightly, for example – regardless of the current stock level. The order quantity covers actual consumption since the previous cycle and restores inventory to a defined maximum. The approach works best for items with stable, foreseeable demand, as it allows orders to be batched and processed routinely, reducing administrative workload. Compared to the order-point system, which responds dynamically to consumption, the fixed-interval method requires higher safety stock to buffer against demand fluctuations between order dates.
