When the Swiss federal government states that petrol and diesel remain available despite low water on the Rhine, that assessment comes from the national economic supply system. National economic supply is the state's task of securing the country's provision of essential goods and services during severe shortages, when the economy can no longer manage on its own. In Switzerland the Federal Office for National Economic Supply (FONES/BWL) carries out this task together with specialists seconded from private industry under a militia model. Its instruments include compulsory stockpiles, continuous monitoring of the supply situation and supply chains, and, in an emergency, market intervention such as quotas or consumption steering. The field matters to freight forwarders because transport capacity, fuel and logistics infrastructure are themselves monitored supply sectors. Not to be confused with civil protection.
