Every heavy goods vehicle entering Switzerland must comply with the LSVA – the Leistungsabhängige Schwerverkehrsabgabe, a performance-related toll applied to vehicles with a gross weight of 3.5 tonnes or more. LSVA policy governs the legal framework, calculation methods, and collection procedures for this charge: the fee depends on kilometres driven within Switzerland, the number of axles, and the vehicle's emission category. Introduced in 2001, the LSVA replaced the previous flat-rate heavy vehicle tax and channels revenue into road and rail infrastructure.
