The Megawatt Charging System (MCS) is the international charging standard for heavy commercial vehicles, enabling charging power in the megawatt range – designed for up to roughly 3.75 megawatts and thus many times more powerful than the CCS connector common in passenger cars. MCS was developed because tractor units with battery capacities of several hundred kilowatt-hours must be recharged during legally mandated driver rest breaks if electric trucks are to be viable in long-haul operations. Vehicle manufacturers quote charging times of around 20 minutes from 20 to 80 percent state of charge for MCS-capable trucks. For haulage operators the decisive point is that an MCS charging station requires a correspondingly strong grid connection, load management and sufficient available power on site; the availability of such charging points along European corridors remains limited at present.
