Definition & Explanation
Investment screening is the government review of acquisitions by foreign investors, used by a state to assess possible security risks to critical infrastructure, sensitive technologies or supply chains. In Germany it runs under the Foreign Trade and Payments Act (AWG) through the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, separately from antitrust merger control, which examines competition rather than security. The process can result in conditions or, in a prohibition, in a complete block of the acquisition.
