Definition & Explanation
An interface is the defined handover point at which two IT systems exchange data automatically, for example a warehouse management system with a transport management system, customs software or a customer's online shop. It specifies which data are transferred, in which format and by which channel. Common in logistics are EDI messages (such as EDIFACT), file transfers and application programming interfaces (APIs) that make data available in real time. Well-maintained interfaces avoid manual double entry and transmission errors, but every interface has to be adapted and tested whenever systems are changed, updated or formats modified. In an organisational sense, the term also describes the handover point between two parties in a transport chain.
