Definition & Explanation

The spot rate is the current market price for a single transport service booked at short notice – without any longer-term contractual commitment. It is formed on the spot market by supply and demand and can fluctuate daily: when capacity is tight – during peak seasons, disruptions on major routes or sudden demand surges such as in the high-tech segment of air freight – spot rates can rise by double digits within weeks; in times of overcapacity they fall below the level of long-term contract rates. Reference indices such as the Drewry World Container Index for ocean freight or the TAC Index for air freight make the development transparent and serve shippers and freight forwarders as a basis for negotiations. Spot rates are suitable for urgent or irregular shipments, while contract rates secure plannable volumes over fixed periods; many shippers therefore pursue a mixed strategy. Not to be confused with the freight rate as the umbrella term for any carriage charge – the spot rate is its most short-term, most volatile form.
