The delivery arrives with a crushed carton, moisture damage, or shifted contents – and the clock starts immediately. Identification of cargo damage is the systematic, evidence-securing recording of loss or damage at the point of receipt, before goods are moved or repacked. It covers visual inspection, classification by damage type (breakage, deformation, moisture, contamination), assessment of extent, and compilation of a formal damage report backed by photographs. That report is the evidentiary foundation for claims against the carrier or cargo insurer. Timing is critical: most transport law regimes and carrier conditions impose strict notice periods, and late reporting can forfeit the right to claim entirely. Identification of cargo damage is distinct from claims settlement – it is the prerequisite first step that determines whether any subsequent claim is viable at all.
