When a supplier dispatches a shipment, it sends the consignee a goods receipt notification—commonly known as an Advance Shipping Notice (ASN)—containing full delivery details before the goods physically arrive. The notice typically includes purchase order numbers, item codes, quantities, lot or batch information, estimated arrival date, and packing or palletisation details. With this data in hand, the receiving warehouse can schedule dock capacity, assign staff, and reconcile incoming goods against system records without delay. In automated receiving environments, the ASN is transmitted electronically via EDI or API and triggers booking processes in the warehouse management system directly. The ASN is now standard practice across supply chain management and is particularly critical when trading with major retailers or operating in e-commerce fulfilment.
