Once goods have been picked and are ready for dispatch, the packaging phase begins: goods packaging protects products from damage, moisture ingress, and contamination throughout transport, handling, and storage. Logistics practice distinguishes three levels—sales packaging at the consumer level, transport packaging as the primary protection for the shipment, and outer or group packaging for multi-part or palletized consignments. Correct packaging reduces return rates and improves cargo space utilization, both of which feed directly into freight costs. Under customs law, packaging is subject to declaration requirements: packaging material, gross weight, and net weight must all be stated on the customs declaration. Certain wood packaging materials are additionally subject to international phytosanitary standards under ISPM 15—wooden pallets and crates that do not comply risk rejection at the border.
