General Average

In maritime law, general average is a principle whereby voluntary sacrifices or extraordinary expenditures are intentionally incurred for the common safety of a ship and its cargo in an emergency. The resulting losses or costs are shared proportionally among all stakeholders (shipowner, cargo owners, carrier).
